Free governance guide published

In an effort to help nonprofits and foundations improve their governance practices, Independent Sector and BoardSource have created a guide to help the nonprofit sector achieve the highest levels of accountability.

The free online workbook is based on the Principles for Good Governance and Ethical Practice, a set of 33 recommendations developed in 2007 by the Panel on the Nonprofit Sector.

The guide groups these recommendations into the areas of legal compliance and public disclosure, effective governance, strong financial oversight and responsible fundraising.

"Nonprofit and foundation boards bear the primary responsibility for ensuring that organizations live up to their legal and ethical obligations to donors, service recipients and the public," Linda Crompton, president and CEO of BoardSource, says in a statement.

So far, Independent Sector has fulfilled 100,000 requests for the documents, which is available on the organization's website.
